Build it or buy it? Workflow solutions with trapping.
Full press-release
Trapping options
Remember when trapping was a skill laboriously honed in prepress departments?
Operators used layout applications’ trapping functionality to apply overprinting strokes
to vector objects in illustration applications or relied on desktop trapping applications
such as TrapWise (still available from current vendor, Creo). As we mentioned earlier,
trapping of PDF files can be accomplished using the Trap Presets Tool in Adobe Acrobat Professional.
This tool does not actually trap the objects in a PDF—instead it creates a set of instructions that
is downloaded to the RIP where the trapping is performed. One major caveat: The trapping instructions
defined here are only compatible with Adobe-based RIPs.
Lucid Dream·s off-the-shelf I-Trap can be used as a RIP plug-in to add in-RIP
trapping to existing (mainly Harlequin-based) RIPs. It runs on the Mac or Windows platform.

I-Trap the Premier Workflow Tool for High Quality
Automatic and Interactive Trapping is NOW Available in a Full Client
Server Model.
There are three new configurations of I-Trap:
I-Trap Full Server, which functions in client - server mode and allows
unlimited ( FREE) clients to prepare files for final trapping by the
licensed server station. Client or Server can be Mac or PC and remote
clients can view jobs, do Ink Remapping, and handle all trap settings
- which are then automatically applied at the server station.
I-Trap Full, this is the currently shipping full version of the
product. This reduced cost version allows clients to view, remap inks,
and control trap settings - final trapping must be applied using the
licensed station.
I-Trap Auto, all versions support Automatic In-Rip Trapping but this
is a new licensing model that initially installs in a fully functional
mode - giving full automatic, interactive, and client server trapping.
After the initial 60-day period the interactive and client server
functionality will end (with ongoing warning messages to the user).
The automatic trapping will continue to function fully afterwards.
Clients can continue to do ink remapping.

Great Eastern processes 50,000 plates using Lucid's TIFF/ITflow with their Delta Rip!
Great Eastern Printing
has 70+ years of
experience providing excellent quality printing to the Long Island and New
York Metropolitan area's largest firms. If quantity of production is any
measure of a firm's success - then Great Eastern stands near the top!
In June of 2003 Great Eastern took the plunge into CTP, the key
consideration was to install a fully automated system that would impact
their high volume - high quality workflow as little as possible. To this
end they installed two - Agfa Galileo VXT's with fully automated plate
handling as their CTP devices.
Great Eastern has 2 shifts of production utilizing the Heidelberg Delta
workflow on 3 different stations - and they didn't want to impact their
production. So Great Eastern selected Lucid Dream Software's TIFF/ITflow
with the 1 bit screened TIFF output option as the interface from the 3 -
Delta workstations to the Galileo's.
Utilizing TIFF/ITflow's automated job ticketing, custom color calibration,
and high speed screening, Great Eastern has achieved the unbelievable goal
of processing more than 50,000 plates in the last 15 months! (That's about
1 plate every 6 minutes for 15 months!)
"Lucid Dream Software has been there for us the few times we have needed
them!" says Martin Sanchez, Prepress manager. "We are very pleased with our
choice!"
For more information about adding 1 bit TIFF output with regular or
stochastic screening in a fully automated fashion, contact
David Lewis, President - Lucid Dream Software, Inc. 847-202-8424.

Client Based PDF Creation Introduced for OnTimeProof®
PDF Connect™ automates PDF Creation and Preflighting
PDF Connect, an Internet-enabled PDF creation and preflighting printer driver, has been
introduced by Lucid Dream Software for use with OnTimeProof, the company's softproofing
and remote approval management system. Easy to use and configure, PDF Connect makes highly
efficient workflows a reality for virtually any print service application-from corporate
in-plant and quick printing to digital printing and CTP-while boosting productivity and
minimizing costs.
PDF Connect, which incorporates Global Graphic's Jaws PDF Courier™, includes Jaws PDF
creation and Enfocus® Pitstop preflighting technologies, places PDF file creation and
preflighting upstream in the hands of customers. Using a special printer driver, customers can
turn a native file into a PDF file and send it to a commercial printer via the Internet, all in
one simple "Print" operation. The Printer Driver can be customized to the print
service provider's exact specification, assuring that the PDF file can be printed while
reducing rework and downtime. In addition, by letting customers create their own PDF files,
print service providers need only upgrade their PDF editing tools, instead of having to
continually upgrade software to match customer's requirements, cutting costs.
"The addition of PDF Connect to OnTimeProof solves two of a print service provider's
most critical problems-virtual preflighting and virtual proofing,
" says David Lewis, president, Lucid Dream."PDF Connect delivers a preflighted production
ready file straight from a client to production, while OnTimeProof delivers proofed files
straight from production to a client. This Internet delivery system not only provides customer's with
greater control over file generation, it also reduces the need for print service providers to
charge customers for having to fix incorrect files."
Lucid Dream's OnTimeProof now features JDF enabled "digital imposition proofing",
which allows users to produce online page-based proofs directly from final imposed and
ripped signature files, increasing accuracy and speeding production. OnTimeProof also
features the ability to annotate files collaboratively during the proofing process.
OnTimeProof is designed for use within a variety of workflows including Heidelberg Delta Rip
and any 1-bit TIFF rip. OnTimeProof is also the automated delivery and proof management
system of choice for other workflows that can produce remote proof files but suggest
emailing them.

Lucid Dream Introduces Macintosh Version of I-Trap™ Software
Mac Version Allows Users to RIP on a PC, Trap on a Macintosh
Lucid Dream Software, Inc., developer of the TIFF/IT flow and OnTime Proof
software solutions, will introduce a Macintosh version of I-Trap™, the first major
upgrade for Harlequin® in-RIP trapping, at Graph Expo, Booth 4548.
The Macintosh version of the I-Trapping software system will allow users to RIP a
file on a PC workstation, then trap it on a Macintosh system. I-Trap is ideal for a
wide range of print shops and printing applications including package, large format,
and high quality print jobs.
"This version of I-Trap provides the best of both worlds for today's printers,
while enhancing print quality, cost savings and workflow flexibility,"
says David Lewis, president, Lucid Dream Software. "Combining Global Graphic's
SDK plug-in for the Harlequin RIP with our sophisticated trapping technology,
the I-Trap software system meets the demand for a reliable trapping solution for
computer-to-plate, as well as the need for a workflow solution for both conventional page l
ayout and PDF production."
The I-Trap Trapping system is a raster-based solution that offers
both automated in-RIP and interactive trapping in a single easy-to-use,
off-the-shelf package. Ideal for all size print shops, I-Trap simplifies
operations, increases productivity, and achieves high-quality trapping-all at a
cost-effective price.
I-Trap integrates easily within a Harlequin workflow environment,
has independent trap parameter settings, and features a Harlequin native
interface. The plug-in works with virtually any vendor's ScriptWorks RIP
and provides high-quality trapping for both PostScript® and PDF workflows.
The I-Trap Interactive Viewer lets users interact directly with the trapping settings and quickly
see the results. The Viewer includes a page manager, an information manager, a graphic configuration
tool, and page preview. The "Trap-on-the-Fly" feature allows users to quickly preview the results
of their custom settings for all of the parameters including miter trapping, ink control behavior,
trap widths, and image and gradient trapping.
The I-Trap user interface is well-designed and easy to use. Lucid Dream also provides an easy-to-use
import wizard for additional file formats such as Heidelberg Delta, TIFF/IT-P1, and others.
"I-Trap is a powerful, fast, and thorough trapping solution," says Adam Olson, prepress manager,
Econoprint, a Wisconsin-based firm. "It's easy to use and can do all the things a vector-based
solution can't. We do a lot of two- and three-color work (black and spot colors) and it handles
elements such as blends and images without a problem. The I-Trap viewer is more useful than
the Harlequin roam feature," he adds.
I-Trap installs as an integral part of a Harlequin RIP on the PC platform.
I-Trap supports Heidelberg Delta, ArtQuest Crescendo, and TIFF/IT-P1 files. The price for
I-Trap is $4695. Lucid Dream's Trapping
Web site offers a free demonstration
download of a limited version of I-Trap as well as additional information on the product's features
and benefits, and on trapping in general.
